I think it's important to read for newbies. It's amazing how many people will tell the police they want a lawyer, and then sit there and proceed to talk to the cops while they wait for the lawyer to show up. When under a lot of stress, people can lose a lot of common sense. If given enough time the police can wear down anyone, even the smartest among us.

It's also a worthwhile reminder of how easy it is to get intimidated in that sort of situation. Lots of people think badly of anyone who doesn't remember to shut up and ask for a lawyer when they've never been in that situation themselves.

Agreed. I was shocked at how much they lie, manipulate, and bully and I previously had a good opinion of the police. If they think you are guilty, they will do their best to trip you up for evidence.

Practice the mantra

1. Am I being detained? (Under what charge?) (I am leaving since I am not under arrest) This is the critical first step.
2. I am exercising my right to remain silent. Get me an attorney.
Repeat 1.

THEN SHUT UP. Don't say ANYTHING no matter WHAT THEY SAY. Or leave if they aren't lawfully detaining you.

If they TOUCH you after you attempt to leave and the answer to 1 is "NO" - GET AN ATTORNEY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and sue the *make screaming monkey noises* PANTS off that department.

The police will plant evidence in sex crimes. They can, and do, have sex with people THEN arrest them.

And if you SHUT UP they have nearly NO REAL EVIDENCE. If they DO have sex with you, ask for a rape kit ASAP. Then get the COP charged for rape.
