Redskins and Indians name change.

Post by Fishstick » Sat Jul 04, 2020 9:54 am

NFL team Washington Redskins and MLB team Cleveland Indians will soon be changing their names.
No word on what the new names will be.
Nike has pulled all Washington Redskins gear from their website. I couldn't tell you if Indians gear has been pulled? Enjoy your weekend.

So is Boston's NBA team going to change it's name due to the Irish slavery and indentured servant thing?

I understand Washington but not Cleveland.

Atlanta Braves are not considering a new name as of now.
This could change if certain corporations or people are pressuring the Braves organization.

As I said somewhere else. I would be honored to have the Washington football team named the fighting ______________ (insert my name here). LOL

I wonder if the KC Chiefs will be pressured to change their name?

In a sarcastic tone.

Someone who's a boss can be called chief. A friend can be called chief. Someone who pisses you off can be called chief. Jason of OKC Street Outlaws is nicknamed Chief because he runs a Pontiac.

Yeah the sports newies here in KC wrote up a ridiculous article on the chiefs name and listed options.
You would think they had better things to do, like actual reporting. But no......
Frankly, if all the native american names and labels disappear, isn't that actually racist along the lines of having that entire ethnic group disappear?

I thought there weren't any actual plans to change anything yet. They were only talking about it, "reviewing" it. I'll believe it when I see it.

Because, equally frankly, it's cultural appropriation. We're using elements of their culture without their consent. It's bad enough we've already "disappeared" them with diseases wiping out the populations, herding them onto reservations, and using boarding schools to destroy their culture. What does it matter if we use their names and terms right? The Redskins isn't just a name either, it's a full-on slur. Not offensive at all. It's past time we stopped all this.

Cultural appropriation? Nope. Cultures have been borrowing from one another since the first time two different cultures met and they didn't ask permission, which begs the obvious question of exactly from whom you would ask permission. I do agree that using terms that are insulting shouldn't be done.

"Cultural appropriation" is a slippery term - though I would argue that, the more unequal the power dynamics between the culture doing the borrowing and the culture being borrowed from, the more appropriate it might be.

Which I think brings up a point that is more important to me: mainstream US culture actively sought to destroy the native cultures, and it seems to me has never admitted it or reversed itself. Given that, the choice to use native american cultural icons in things like team mascots seems to be more like "adding insult to injury" than anything else - and would be enough grounds to have all these teams switch to something more neutral, like other animals - or maybe the "fighting flowers" ? ;-p

The only exception I can see would apply to those teams that adopted native american icons, and also established relations with native american tribes and have included as part of their charter to help maintain those native cultures. I think the Florida Seminoles fall in this category - and there may be oter, smaller teams.

I read an interesting section from a book om this subject: "Mascot Nation: The Controversy over Native American Representations in Sports" - the sectio that was available for free on Google Books...

Yeah, I saw something about that. Some guy has registered trademarks on a bunch of different names, and even had merchandise manufactured to maintain the trademarks.

Have a very close friend, Menomonee Indian. His favorite team is the Washington Redskins. Sees Indian names as a thing of honor, says most Indians feel the same way. Claims it is a minority of Indians, and mostly white people, who object. His feelings, not mine. I don't believe calling a team the "Indians", or "Braves", or "Chiefs" is a bad thing. The Cleveland logo has always been silly though, and they have pretty much gotten rid of it already.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Chief of the Illiniwek tribe and interview him for an article about the removal of the team mascot and Native symbology associated with the school.

He thought it was stupid. The tribe never objected EXCEPT they wanted a cut of the merchandising royalties to openly support it. He had dozens of certified letters to the UI President and Board of Trustees that according to Board minutes were never even addressed or made public.

No, they listened to the ravings of a Jewish professor, who committed what appeared to be mail fraud by passing himself off as the UI spokesperson to the other Big 10 schools and the NCAA. I had the GREAT displeaure of dealing with egomania on several occasions.

The state should be watching a large chunk of farm ground in Douglas County nesr the Tuscola exit. When he passed away, he bequeathed that land to the tribe, with the hope it would become a tribal casino. As tribal property, they couldnt do squat to stop it.

No irony lost that in the announcement that they might consider thinking about forming a working group to maybe have a name change ...
They sent it out with Redskins logo and naming all over it.

How else could the Washington team send out an "official " team press release without using their team's letterhead ? The press and others need to know it is a real press release from the actual team.

Considering this is one of the 32 franchises in the most popular sports league in the U.S., I think they would have had no difficulty in making it clear who the press release came from.

Washington did it like all the other "official " team press releases from their recent past on social media. Do you follow major sports leagues? If yes, then you know about the rumors, reports, and releases that get sent out and reported on. Sometimes, they tend to be bogus. So, to avoid any doubt it is an "official" team press release. Washington used their team's "official" letterhead until they figure out a new name/logo. The way it was done made it 100 percent clear it was from the real team. How else was the "official" team presser to be released ?.

Not just anyone has access to the team's social media platforms. The Washington team used their "official' letterhead and used their "official" team's social media platforms to release it. Still waiting. How the team could have issued the press release differently than all the other times before in the recent past?

Not just anyone has access to the team's social media platforms. The Washington team used their "official' letterhead and used their "official" team's social media platforms to release it. Still waiting. How the team could have issued the press release differently than all the other times before in the recent past?
Very simply. Without using the logos that they had just announced they were going to stop using.

The Chicago Blackhawks are probably next up.

I personally think The Generics would make a great name for a team! LOL
