Heroin epidemic

Post by YAG » Sun Jan 03, 2016 10:38 am

Going to look into stats later, but my guess is it's worse than we're hearing about.

Take this ad openly willing to barter for it:

I get away - far away - when I see signs. Too many inherent risks.

I wouldn't touch that with a pole the length of a football field. She's just asking to get busted.

Ugh it is a tragedy. There's plenty of literature about heroin epidemics in the past decades in North America. This time around having synthetic opiates thrown into the mix makes it much worse. Just terrible....

Does all this include that K2, "fake weed" stuff? What are the odds it includes heroin?

K2--Some professor out east managed to extract only certain molecules or whatever from marijuana. Someone then made a spray out of it and they spray it on stuff that was perfectly legal to smoke. And so it was legal for a while. Then illegal. Then works the molecules some more and legal again.

Finally they have made it all illegal.

Never has been on regular tobacco or anything. The stuff they spray it on does not seem smokable at all to me. Potpourri, incense and who knows what else. Maybe that causes more damage than anything else...

IF it is just a product of marijuana. I have heard of heroin being sprayed on stuff too. Anyone else?

On a weird note I might be lucking into a home purchase due to the homeowner's misfortune due to heroin addiction.......it's disturbing that this epidemic is reaching that far up into upper class society. Very troubling....

Not sure class has much to do with it. If you have the money you can get away with a lot more before you get caught. And if you do get caught you can afford a good lawyer who will be instrumental in getting the charges reduced. The poorer you are the harder it is to avoid the legal system.

Did some more research because of the flood of ads with 60 and 80 specials.

It appears that's the range in the street price for half a gram.

Really interesting connection. I was wondering about those posts and have noticed their frequency has increased as well.

I'd wager that the travelers quoting that price have their pimp/drug dealer near at hand at all times.

The K2/Spice/fake marijuana has NOT been sprayed with anything remotely resembling THC or anything organic. K2 is simply organic matter (leaves or chaff from some plant) that has been sprayed with a toxic mix of synthetic chemicals that 'mimic' the intoxication produced from a marijuana high.

Completely and totally agree Yag. So should we go the way of Portugal. I know we won't under Trump, all I see him doing is spending billions more on a failed drug war. I have a cousin who is addicted to morphine due to reconstructive surgery. She has done her best to wean off but is struggling. Med marijuana helps but the cost is rediculace for a plant that can grow better than corn.

Trump "war on drugs" plan is build a wall and deport the drug dealers.
I dont think the problem is a heroin epidemic - its hillbilly heroin ... meth.
Reducing government healthcare services and funding "community" (i.e. church based) services will do *make screaming monkey noises* all.

Backpage is just an easy outlet for girls to make money for their drug of choice. 90% of the women advertising on BP are in active addiction or being pimped. Yes there's women that advertise because they thoroughly enjoy themselves, are paying bills, or want extra shopping money...This is a very small percentage though. Men want to get their d*cks wet...I get it completely (and would be glad to do that for you, haha) but the next time you're looking at an AD on BP take it into consideration that the chance of her being a clean Contractor is slim to none...especially for the very young companions. South Bend, Indiana's BP is jam packed with heroin addicts & so is Indianapolis's BP.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE METH! Yes I've personally tried it in my past..and the same goes for other drugs (Not afraid to admit that since I know I'm sober) I know exactly what meth does to your body, I've seen what meth does to the people that use it intravenously & miss their vein..it actually turns into a bad infection and needs lanced open immediately, the lithium in the meth begins seeping out of their skin's pores (this is why they begin to pick at themselves causing the sores), one girl I knew was on it so bad she would swear up and down her pussy stunk like a dead body and she would get butt naked and pick at her pussy for hours (She was on BP, go figure)....Meth is a nasty drug....its becoming a really big problem just like heroin.

I just found out two weeks ago that my baby sister ...only 17 years old....was actively using meth. She was found passed out in her truck at a Walmart with a 30 year old man last week! She was skin and bones, sores all over her body, and her attitude was horrible. Thankfully she was placed in juvenile detention and I'm praying she is getting the help that she needs. She wasn't working but somehow had a lot of money all the time so I honestly believe she was advertising ...she was found with $200 cash and several gift cards all with money still on them. This drug epidemic can hit home for anybody.

Wow - sorry to hear about your sister. I hope she does get help, and equally importantly, decides she needs and wants to accept it. On the flip side, very glad to hear that you have managed to escape that trap.

Wow - this is a bummer " read " but sadly it is reality. I am not in the young loop but what would be the start of a solution? The epidemic has probably affected all of us on a personal level. Prohibition seems to put everything "underground". But??

Decriminalize all drugs and make dispensaries that require some sort of help be directly available? That's why I mentioned Portugal. From what I have read things seem better there.

I never personally understood harder drugs. A few drinks a month, beer or Captain and maybe a cigar a year and I'm happy.

Prohibition has failed. It failed with alcohol. It has failed with marijuana. Heroin. Cocaine. Meth. Legalization and taxation worked with booze 99% of the time. There are still trucks stolen and sold on the black market, but the risk-profit margins are small. There are still moonshiners selling their contraband hooch. Again - the risk-profit ratio is slim, and their aren't many players in the field.

We are creating quasi-governments of ultra-wealthy drug lords whose sole motivation is getting their product to the consumer for a profit. They will go to war to protect those profits. They are a great example of runaway capitalism.

1. I lost a good friend who was a high functioning heroin addict when he went to a different supplier to get his fix. It was cut with something that acted as a hallucinogen. His companion said that he was "talking to a fairy that convinced him he could fly". He stepped off a 6th floor balcony. The drugs didnt kill him - the sudden stop at the bottom did.

He had a great job, and was ADHD. Would do anything for a friend. If you didn't know he did heroin you wouldn't have suspected.

2. When I was in my early 20s I had a serious accident. It is dumb luck I am not in a wheelchair. 3 months off work, 6 months on painkillers, 12 months in a backbrace. Long term damage that I still suffer from.

I empathize with addicts to some extent. The painkillers I was on was a syrup based opiate that was a heavily controlled substance with a warning label that said "Poison S8" on it. I needed it. Then I craved it. Just thinking about it gives me a craving for it (I am literally salivating while I am writing this) - and that was over 20 years ago. I told my doctor what was happening. He basically put me on a rehab style detox program to ween me off it. It was hell.

===

Prohibition doesnt work - it just pushes the problem underground ...
... but neither would legalization - because one of the big problems is actually legally available prescription meds (Oxy).
I don't have an answer.

Marijuana is not a gateway drug - the over-medication of people with pain medications is the gateway in a lot of cases, then the sudden cessation. Getting the prescription medications is illegal, and difficult. Getting the illegal pain medications - illegal but doable if you are willing to take the risks.

Doctors get people hooked on drugs daily in this country, then just cut them loose. I've watched films of people going through withdrawal, and read accounts of it - it sounds like hell on earth.

Just a shame on how many lives this has affected. Making 'it" illegal has not worked. Making it legal should be tried but need a "top" down discussion on qualifications. Just like we should recognize the difference between when we need antibiotics and when it is a virus that just needs supportive therapy.
