Any technology product originating from China is at least somewhat suspect in my opinion.
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

It's a bit of a concern, in that these days _everything_ is made in China ... :-(

One of the reasons I prefer iPhones to any of the Android devices is the idea that there is a validation step, before apps are deployed to the Apple App Store, where they check for malicious behavior on the part of the candidate apps. Imperfect as it may be, it's better than nothing - witness the significantly higher number of malicious apps found on Google Play. Also the reason why jailbreaking phones is a really risky idea...

It may be that a lot of what TikTok collects is no worse than what other apps (like Facebook) collect - and so may not be the kind of thing that the App Store curators would flag as malicious. That may be a larger discussion of the degree to which we've allowed data about us to be gathered ... :-(
